Laramie's Basecamp Presents Explorers Night: Crossing the Atlantic - Jon Lever
As a young boy, Jon was fortunate enough to go out on his grandfather’s sailboat on several occasions, even getting to spend the night on board and watch a submarine come into the Thames River in Connecticut one morning. This led to a love of the sea that, over time, was taken over by life. College, career, family – all those things that we cherish but also can hide the dreams of our younger selves. However, Jon was fortunate enough that his wife encouraged him to find that love of the sea again.
Eventually, he and his family bought their own boat, and after setting sail, they suffered several setbacks (ranging from being struck by lightning to their son knocking three teeth out in a diving accident) that caused them to have to put it up for sale. Jon was close to being able to have the sea time necessary to take his captain’s license test, so he and his family decided that they would look for opportunities for him to be a part of a crew. This is exactly how he ended up being invited to join the crew of Prima4, a Privilege 465 (46’ catamaran), sailing from Virginia to Morocco. The Prima4 spent a total of 25 days on the water, not seeing land for 21 of those days. Come listen to Jon’s story of reconnecting with his love of the sea and his journey crossing the Atlantic.
